These antique tiles are hand-made, hand-glazed and manufactured by Solon and Schemmel Tile Co., San Jose, CA, circa 1920
through the 1930s. They are sometimes subject to wide variations in color and size. List sizes are approximate, in the
larger tile the range may be +/- 1/2", with a thickness of 1/2" to 3/4". Minor chips are present on some tiles, although
rare. Glazes can be inconsistent, yet close to those shown. Overglazing, resulting in color blending, is not all that
uncommon. Most of these tiles were made with press molds in either the "cuenca" style, with ridges (cloisons)
separating glaze colors, or "cuerda seca" style (dry line), using a black wax/grease resist to separate the colors. Special
treatment of individual orders available at an additional cost, and because these are antique tiles, they are sold on a
first-come-first-served basis. The tiles listed are only the beginning. These are New Old Stock, not restored or salvaged.
